Ayurveda comes with many Sanskrit words that are extremely important for understanding how we can achieve balance. The doshas are used to define our personality, body and health, always in a way that indicates what our imbalances are and what actions we should take. Prana, tejas and ojas are also related to the doshas, but in a different way. They talk about the vital essence of our body, and about the strengths for us to feel healthy.

If we say that we have some imbalance in pitta, for example, it is a sign that this dosha is overstimulated and we should decrease it. On the other hand, prana, tejas and ojas work in the opposite way. The goal is to increase them (always in balance) to achieve vitality. Also, like the doshas, prana, tejas and ojas are governed by the elements of nature and are considered the "subtle levels" of the three doshas. In other words, what is most essential and primitive in these definitions: the essence of health. To better understand this, we prepared this text to understand how each one of them works and what to do to increase them when an imbalance is noticed.

OJAS

And finally, the Ojas, which are related to Kapha and formed by the union of earth and water. The word that defines what Ojas represents is resistance. Speaking of health, this subtle force is related to our immunity, rejuvenation, and the healing capacities of our body. It is also responsible for transmitting peace, calm, patience, and a very stable psychic characteristic. In other words, physical and also mental/emotional stamina.

To keep the ojas at good levels it is necessary to have an adequate rest routine, get enough sleep, have balance, and always prioritize natural foods.

TEJAS

Tejas is ruled by the subtle force of fire and water and is related to the Pitta dosha. It is responsible for our digestive fire and transformation of what we eat into energy and vitality (and this goes beyond food). Enzymes, hormones, amino acids and everything related to our metabolism are part of tejas. So are mental understanding and applied knowledge ("digestion of ideas"). It is our "inner light".

To increase this subtle force we just need to find ways to receive the external heat and lights. The sun, foods with digestive and "warm" properties are sources of tejas. When we talk about emotions, it is the one that gives us courage and strength to understand situations, people, and act with lucidity and determination.

PRANA

Prana, as well as Vata is formed by Air and Ether and represents the pure energy of life (bio), being the most subtle and behind all the most essential functions of the body. And as its elements propose, it is responsible for breathing/oxygenation, coordination, mind and the most sensorial functions. Also, it can be seen as the force for movement, inspiration and creativity - the force of subtle action.

To find it, it is important to maintain contact with nature, the primordial source of this force, through pure air. And also, in fresh, unprocessed food. Prana (pranayama) is the word used in Yoga to define the breathing exercises, which can also elevate this essence. Related to feelings and emotions, prana is responsible for our enthusiasm and will to act.
