Saint George (Greek: Άγιος Γεώργιος; Romaniz.: Agios Geṓrgios; Latin: Georgius; between 275 and 280 - April 23, 303), also known as George of Cappadocia and George of Lydda was, according to tradition, a Roman soldier in the army of Emperor Diocletian, venerated as a Christian martyr. In hagiography, St. George is one of the most venerated saints in Catholicism, in the Orthodox Church, as well as in the Anglican Communion. He is immortalized in the legend in which he slays the dragon. He is also one of the Fourteen auxiliary saints. In the canon of Pope Gelasius (+496), Saint George is mentioned among those who "have been justly revered by men and whose deeds are known only to God."

Regarded as one of the most prominent military saints, the memory of Saint George is celebrated on April 23 and November 3. On these dates, the reconstruction of the church dedicated to him in Lydda (Israel), in which his relics are located, is commemorated everywhere. The church was built on the orders of the Roman Emperor Constantine.
