Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian painter. "Mona Lisa" was one of the works that made him famous as one of the greatest names of the Renaissance.

Leonardo da Vinci was born in the small village of Vinci, near Florence, Italy, on April 15, 1452. Son of the notary Pierro and the young Catherine, while still a boy, he was already drawing and painting.

In 1466, he moved with his family to Florence. At 16 he became an apprentice to the Florentine painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio, where Filippino Lippi and other painters, protégés of the governor Lorenzo de Medici, worked.

Da Vinci's first important work was a part of the canvas "The Baptism of Christ" by Verrocchio, when he painted the angels and the landscape on the left of the painting

In 1478, Leonardo da Vinci was commissioned to execute an altar panel for the chapel of St. Bernard in the Lordship's Palace. In 1481 he was commissioned to paint a panel for the church of the friars of San Donato, of Scopeto, near Florence, but the work "Adoration of the Magi" remained unfinished.

In 1482, at the age of 30, Da Vinci moved to Milan and offered his services to Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan, presenting himself as an engineer, architect and painter. In 1483 he painted the painting "The Virgin of the Rocks", of which there are two versions, one in the Louvre Museum and the other, probably later, in the National Gallery in London.

In 1495, Leonardo da Vinci began the work "The Last Supper", a fresco of considerable dimensions, 9 meters wide and 4 meters 20 cm high, on a wall of the Convent of Santa Maria dele Grazie in Milan. It took three years of work, drawing and redrawing the figures of the Supper.

At this time, he painted the picture "The Lady with an Armin," the portrait of Cecilia Gallerani, the 14-year-old mistress of the Duke of Milan.

Leonardo da Vinci stayed in Milan until 1499 to design the cathedral, but ended up sketching and building the canal network and a vast irrigation and water supply system. He designed the complete urbanization of the city. That same year, when the French invaded the city, Leonardo returned to Florence.

In Venice, Da Vinci studied the defensive system of the city threatened by the Turks. He studied anatomy and was accused of disrespecting the dead by dissecting corpses, a practice that was a crime, besides being a sin against the Church. He recorded countless drawings in the "Treatise on Anatomy" that he wrote.

Back in Florence, he was appointed Military Engineer and accompanied Cesare Borgia in his war ventures. In 1503, he started the canvas "Gioconda". According to painter and biographer Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574), Francesco del Giocondo, a wealthy Florentine, commissioned Leonardo to paint a portrait of his wife.

In 1507 he was appointed painter and engineer at the court of Louis XII of France, That same year he finished Giocondo's Mona Lisa, which became the most famous painting in Western painting. Today it is in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Leonardo da Vinci lived in Rome from 1513 to 1516, where he was protected by the brother of Pope Leo X. He placed himself at the service of Julian of Medici. At this time, he painted "Saint John the Baptist," probably his last work.

With the death of Julian, da Vinci left Italy for good and moved to the Chateau de Cloux in Amboise, France, a residence of Francis I, where he took his manuscripts, hundreds of drawings and three paintings, all made to order and none of them delivered.

Leonardo da Vinci died at the Castle of Cloux, Amboise, France, on May 2, 1519. He was buried in the convent of the Church of Saint Florentin in Amboise.
